Lapisan demi lapisan ditimbun di bawah vokal pria yang tenang, efek latar merayap, sampai kamarnya sesak. Ada kontras yang menyenangkan saat reff tiba, drum penuh dan vokal latar merapat dalam harmoni rapi. Kepala kita mengangguk tanpa minta izin. Baitnya cuma serpihan satu dua kata, jadi seluruh beban ditaruh di pundak reff. Untung pundaknya kuat.
Dalam bahasa Inggris, “give up the ghost”, harfiahnya melepas hantu, berarti menyerah atau mengembuskan napas terakhir. Modern Olympia dan Chic Chameleon merilisnya sehari sebelum Halloween, jadi hantunya datang tepat waktu.
Tapi reff Give Up The Ghost justru bilang hantu itu akan menetap dan menyuruh kita hidup bersamanya. Judulnya menyuruh menyerah, liriknya menyuruh berdamai. Saya masih menimbang yang mana.
