Itulah premis Haunted Hotel, lagu pertama yang ditulis Shannon Provost untuk proyek Shansylvania, sekaligus salah satu lagu pertama yang pernah ia coba tulis. Tokohnya resepsionis-abadi-bertaring yang berjaga di shift malam sambil terus menunggu kekasihnya kembali. “But I’ll get paid while I cry,” nyanyinya. Lebih jujur dari kata-kata motivasi di grup WhatsApp kantor.
Ia lahir dari riff piano yang murung, lalu dibesarkan ramai-ramai oleh sebuah band. Ritmenya stabil dan tak buru-buru, seperti shift malam yang tak kunjung selesai. Bass dan drum berdenyut pekat di bawah, sementara gitar listrik melapisinya dengan rasa tegang yang tetap elegan. Ada ruang yang lapang di sini, tapi padat isinya, dan bumbu horornya ditabur secukupnya saja sehingga kita betah berlama-lama di lobi itu.
Saya memang selalu lemah pada lagu yang menyimpan sedihnya di balik kostum.
Satu-satunya yang agak kebanyakan dari Haunted Hotel ada di bagian akhir, ketika judulnya diulang-ulang empat kali sebagai penutup. Pintu hotelnya sudah kita temukan sejak tadi kok.
