Setelah memenangkan tiga penghargaan Grammy tahun 2017, Chance The Rapper menjadi penanda keberhasilan musisi independen tanpa label rekaman. Perihal kontrak eksklusif album “Coloring Book” pada layanan Apple Music selama 2 minggu, pada 17 Maret 2017 lalu, ia pun menggunakan akun sosial media twitter miliknya untuk meluruskan segala sangkaan miring.
Dalam seri kicauannya, Chance The Rapper tidak malu-malu untuk menyebutkan nilai kontrak sebesar setengah juta dolar dari Apple selama 2 minggu eksklusif, sebelum akhirnya disebarkan gratis melalui soundcloud. Chance menegaskan bahwa hal ini sah-sah saja, karna toh ia butuh uangnya. Ia tak berusaha mengambil keuntungan secara culas. Ia hanya berusaha menjadi realistis saat itu.

Album “Coloring Book”, sebuah album mixtape tahun 2016 milik Chance The Rapper membuat Grammy mengubah kebijakan untuk persyaratan album yang masuk kategori nominasi. Ia menjadi satu-satunya album tanpa rilisan fisik dalam sejarah Grammy, selain itu album ini pun dibagikan gratis melalui Souncloud.
Dalam sebuah wawancara terbaru dengan web Complex, Chance berencana akan merilis album (sebenar-benar album, bukan mixtape) debut dan kemungkinan akan menjual album tersebut. Ia berujar “That’s, like, a big step in itself. I kind of hate the fact that I can’t chart, really. I can chart, but the way they have the streaming sh-t set up is weak as f–k. It’s unfair. 1,500 streams is the equivalent to one [album sale], and that’s just that’s unfair. Nobody listens to their songs [1,500] times when they buy it—f–k outta here! So, it makes it hard. I can’t really compete with other people. Not that the charts matter at all, but c’mon.”.
